you can fix the pinterest overlapping problem with a simple CSS
yes you can add the addthis or any custom button to the vertical sidebar. The vertical sidebar displays button added to the large custom button section. So you need to add the addthis button code to the large custom button section.
To change the background of the bar add css for div.social4iv. example below
