Using Custom CSS field

Hi I am trying to use the custom css box in the plug-ins settings menu but my lack of extensive knowledge is suggesting that I have no idea how to utilize it.

I am trying to put some padding of say 10 to 20 px between where it is appearing on the bottom of my footer and some links that are directly above it.

Can someone please explain to me if I am creating my own class or if I need to know the class name of whatever to get this to happen.

Thanks
